Here are the ten books I’d choose if I was limited to only ten for a whole year. Note, they must be ones I’ve already read:

  1. Declare, Tim Powers
  2. Midnight’s Children, Salman Rushdie
  3. Songs of Ice and Fire, George R.R. Martin (yes, the whole series so far. I don’t care if you think this is cheating, this is my hypothetical and I’ll do as I please).
  4. Tin Roof Blowdown, James Lee Burke
  5. Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, Hunter S. Thompson
  6. American Psycho, Brett Easton Ellis
  7. Choke, Chuck Palaniuk
  8. Cloud Atlas, David Mitchell
  9. The Black Company Series, Glenn Cook (yes, the whole series so far. I still don’t care if you think I’m cheating).
  10. The Pastwatch Series, Orson Scott Card (see above)

I could go on and on about why I’d take these books to a virtual desert island, but I won’t. What I will say is:

  • they are on this list because they are long-time favourites that I can read over and over again without getting bored
  • or, because as a writer, I beleive I stand to gain something from close study of these texts
  • or, both.

What would you choose?
