Here are the ten books I’d choose if I was limited to only ten for a whole year. Note, they must be ones I’ve already read:
- Declare, Tim Powers
- Midnight’s Children, Salman Rushdie
- Songs of Ice and Fire, George R.R. Martin (yes, the whole series so far. I don’t care if you think this is cheating, this is my hypothetical and I’ll do as I please).
- Tin Roof Blowdown, James Lee Burke
- Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, Hunter S. Thompson
- American Psycho, Brett Easton Ellis
- Choke, Chuck Palaniuk
- Cloud Atlas, David Mitchell
- The Black Company Series, Glenn Cook (yes, the whole series so far. I still don’t care if you think I’m cheating).
- The Pastwatch Series, Orson Scott Card (see above)
I could go on and on about why I’d take these books to a virtual desert island, but I won’t. What I will say is:
- they are on this list because they are long-time favourites that I can read over and over again without getting bored
- or, because as a writer, I beleive I stand to gain something from close study of these texts
- or, both.
